When it comes to air conditioning systems, there are a few common problems that can arise.  The best way to determine if your unit needs repairing or even replacing is to contact a professional air conditioning service engineer.  There are a few warning signs (some more serious than others!)  of a malfunctioning air conditioning unit that should signal that you need to have it looked at as soon as possible.

If your system does not turn on and appears to have no power to it at all then you might first want to check your breakers to eliminate the possibility of a simple blown fuse.  Other than that you are dealing with 230 volts or even 415volts both of which can deliver a fatal shock so isolate the air conditioning at a fuse box if it is possible to safely do so and call out an engineer to take a look.  Many times this can be a simple replacement part that can be swapped out easily by a trained professional.

If your air conditioning system has stopped producing cold air and seems to be only producing room temperature or even warm air then this can indicate a loss of coolant or a leak.  This cannot be repaired without specialist tools and equipment.  Turn off the air conditioning unit to prevent further damage and call out an engineer.

A large build-up of ice around the unit can be a sign of a faulty or broken fan system and will usually require a replacement part if left unfixed for an extended period of time.  Turn off the air conditioning unit to prevent further damage and call out an engineer.

More rarely a malfunctioning unit may produce a strong smell or even produce smoke or sparks from time to time.  This could be a serious electrical fault.  Turn off the unit at the main power and call out an engineer immediately.
